i am just finishing up managing arousal 2.0 and wondering if i can back up to managing arousal 101?
we live in illadelphia and have a very dog centric existence. the husky was tied up in a backyard for at least a year with another female (they were separated before i got there) the akita was part of a neglect and hoarde and literally died when they scraped his parasite ridden body off the floor to which he was fused with feces. he spent almost 3 months in the mainline spca clinic and is now a 120# joy boy.
he scares handlers. that's one of our top 5 problems. our number one problem is my inconsistency. our number 2 problem is let me meet every dog who has ever existed...let me meet them now with the energy of lil jon being paid by seagram's gin. please. now. that dog. i must know it.
rewarding self check in was the first tool i started using. i am wondering...what is the greatest duration i can allow to pass before giving the command again? what is the balance between trusting the dog to respond and my sense of urgency? sansa (the husky) can delay her response almost 60 seconds...which is...well, she missed it, right?
